Energy Science Fundamentals

A concise, clear, and powerful introduction to energy science fundamentals, starting with force, work, energy, power, intensity, light, basic optics, heat flow mechanisms, heat capacity, the First & Second Laws of Thermodynamics, etc, with examples and practice relating to renewable energy and energy storage. Precisely what you need to get started in the Renewable Energy Arena! Delivered via live-Zoom sessions in three, two-hours sessions on three successive week-day evenings. Have you ever wondered what energy really is, and how it is quantified in various ways? Or about the difference between “kilowatts” and “kilowatt-hours” (something that people often get confused)? Or how to calculate something like how much water needs to be lifted by some distance to store the same amount of energy that, say, a lithium-ion battery in an electric car can store? Or how to conceptualize and/or calculate the amount of energy conveyed by an hour’s worth of sunlight falling on a solar collector?

If these kinds of questions intrigue you, or you simply need to understand these fundamentals to work with energy technology or on energy issues, then this is the course for you. Taught by an experienced physics teacher with special expertise in renewable energy and a love of teaching newcomers to the subject, this course will immensely empower you to tackle the world of energy. You will not only learn the concepts, but practice their application. Your understanding will also be gently tested and corrected if necessary to ensure you understand things correctly. By the end you will find yourself able to quickly evaluate energy questions yourself, and readily distinguish fact from fiction.

Course Format: To ensure an effective and interactive learning experience, this course, as well as all courses taught by Renewable Energy Now!, are taught in live-Zoom classes. Online assignments are also provided for participants to complete on their own.  To remain in good standing for the Certificate of Completion, participants must attend fully attend all Zoom sessions and maintain proper “netiquette”, including keeping one’s camera on, although non-identifying, innocuous “Zoom names” may be used.
